When Jocasta truly gave birth to a son, the Delphic oracle reminded Laius of the curse. In a fit of unparalleled cowardice, Laius, who had not experienced paternal feelings, at the agreement of his wife, pierced and tied the son's legs and sent a servant to throw the newborn into the wilderness. Why the king feared that the child could run away without tying his legs is not told to us. Perhaps he was not very sensible, because the thought that a child grown in love might not even think of murder did not occur to Laius either.
